LlamaParse is LlamaIndex's document platform: tiered parsing, schema extraction, classification, a beta split API, and hosted indexing for retrieval. It is a strong choice when parsed documents feed a LlamaIndex RAG or agent stack. Teams look for alternatives when documents become systems of record: on open benchmarks, LlamaParse trails on field-level accuracy and long-table extraction, citations and confidence are off by default in the Extract API, and review, evaluation, and form filling are left to your application.
TLDR:
- LlamaParse covers Parse (Fast, Cost Effective, Agentic, Agentic Plus), Extract, Classify, Split (beta), and Index, with Python, TypeScript, and REST access.
- Pricing: 10,000 free credits a month, Starter at $50 for 40,000 credits, Pro at $500 for 400,000 credits, and custom Enterprise plans. 1,000 credits cost $1.25.
- On RealDoc-Bench, LlamaParse Agentic scored 92.1% and non-agentic 89.0%, against 95.7% for Extend Parse 2.0. On LongArray-Extract, LlamaParse Standard completed 26 of 45 documents at 47.2%.
- Documented limits: Extract jobs cap at 500 pages and 100 MB, text beyond 64 KB per page is dropped without an error, and
cite_sourcesandconfidence_scoresdefault to false in the API. - For W-9 and 1099 forms, the deciding factors are checkbox and handwriting accuracy, TIN validation, and per-field review. That is where Extend, Reducto, and LlamaParse differ most.
What LlamaParse is
LlamaParse grew out of LlamaIndex, the open-source framework for building retrieval and agent applications over private data. It turns documents into markdown, text, or JSON for LLM pipelines and connects directly to LlamaCloud Index for chunking, embedding, and retrieval. For the framework itself, see our LlamaIndex review. This review covers the document products.
Features
- Parse: four tiers trade cost for depth. Fast returns text without markdown and is meant for plain, single-column pages. Cost Effective handles simple tables. Agentic targets most real-world PDFs, scans, and multi-column layouts. Agentic Plus targets complex financial tables and scientific papers, with specialized chart parsing on by default. Parse accepts 130+ formats and files up to 512 MB, per the documented limits.
- Extract: schema-based extraction from JSON Schema, Pydantic, or Zod, in Cost Effective, Agentic, Agentic Plus, and Turbo tiers. Schemas can reach 3,200 fields. Citations (
cite_sources) and confidence scores (confidence_scores) are opt-in in the API and on by default in the playground, per the Extract configuration guide. - Classify and Split: Classify sorts documents by rules you describe. Split, in beta, segments concatenated PDF, DOCX, or PPTX files into up to 50 categories with high, medium, or low confidence per segment.
- Index: hosted retrieval with source syncing and support for custom vector stores.
- Agents and enterprise: MCP and agent skills for coding agents, plus SOC 2 Type II, Enterprise HIPAA BAA options, and managed SaaS, single-tenant, BYOC, and self-hosted deployment, per LlamaIndex's enterprise readiness page.
Pricing
| Plan | Monthly price | Included credits | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10,000 | Upgrade required for pay-as-you-go |
| Starter | $50 | 40,000 | Pay-as-you-go up to 400,000 credits |
| Pro | $500 | 400,000 | Pay-as-you-go up to $5,000 a month, priority Slack support |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Dedicated support |
LlamaIndex converts credits at $1.25 per 1,000. Basic parsing starts at 1 credit per page, and agentic parsing costs more per page; Extract, Split, and Index have their own rates. Re-parsing the same file within 48 hours is free because results are cached by default. Check the LlamaParse pricing page for current rates, and compare the full workflow cost rather than a single parse call.
Benchmark results
| Benchmark | LlamaParse | Extend |
|---|---|---|
| RealDoc-Bench field-level document Q&A | 92.1% Agentic, 89.0% non-agentic | 95.7% Parse 2.0, 90.5% Light |
| LongArray-Extract mean accuracy | 47.2% Standard (26 of 45 documents completed), 34.7% Agentic (35 of 45) | 99.2% MAX (45 of 45) |
LlamaIndex's own ParseBench reports 84.9% for LlamaParse Agentic against 55.8% for the Extend configuration it tested. That test compared LlamaParse's multi-step agentic mode with Extend's earlier default parser, not Parse 2.0. The Extend vs LlamaParse comparison covers both benchmarks in detail. All of these datasets are public, so run them, and your own documents, before deciding.
Limitations
- Long tables: on LongArray-Extract, which scores arrays up to 2,205 rows, LlamaParse was the only evaluated provider whose tested modes did not finish all 45 documents.
- Extract job size: Extract caps at 500 pages and 100 MB per job (limits), so long packets need splitting before extraction.
- Silent truncation: text beyond 64 KB on a single page is dropped without an error (limits), which matters for dense statements and spreadsheets.
- Citations and confidence are opt-in:
cite_sourcesandconfidence_scoresdefault to false in the API (Extract configuration), so pipelines built from API examples can ship without per-field evidence. - Split is in beta: the split API is subject to breaking changes and accepts only PDF, DOCX, and PPTX.
- Quality operations are yours to build: the product docs don't describe a native reviewer queue that pauses a workflow, an integrated evaluation-and-release flow, or a PDF form-filling API.
Strengths
- Native path from parsing into hosted retrieval for LlamaIndex applications.
- Broad format coverage and a large open-source community.
- Clear tiers with a low-cost entry point and generous free credits.
- Self-hosted and BYOC options for teams that need to run it in their own environment.
Best LlamaParse alternatives
Extend
Extend is document processing infrastructure for production pipelines: parse, extract, classify, split, edit, workflows, evals, and review in one platform. Parse 2.0 scored 95.7% on RealDoc-Bench and Extend MAX scored 99.2% on LongArray-Extract with every document completed. Extraction returns citations with page and polygon plus confidence metadata, workflows pause uncertain values for human review, and the Edit API fills PDF forms. Pricing starts with 10,000 free credits and pay-as-you-go at $0.0125 per credit, with zero data retention available on request.
Reducto
Reducto offers parse, extract, split, and edit APIs with a focus on complex layouts. On RealDoc-Bench, Reducto Agentic scored 91.1%. On LongArray-Extract, Deep Extract scored 97.4% and completed every document, at 2.8 times Extend's latency. See the Reducto review for details.
Unstructured
Unstructured offers an open-source library and a hosted platform for turning documents into chunks for vector stores. It fits ingestion-heavy RAG pipelines that need many connectors. See Extend vs Unstructured.
Docling
Docling is an MIT-licensed, open-source conversion toolkit from IBM Research that runs locally. It fits teams that need offline parsing and can own accuracy testing, review, and scaling themselves.
LlamaParse alternatives for W-9 and 1099 tax forms
Tax forms look simple and fail in specific places. A W-9 (Rev. March 2024) carries the name, business name, federal tax classification checkboxes on line 3a, the foreign-partner checkbox on line 3b, exemption codes, address, the taxpayer identification number in Part I, and a signature and date in Part II. 1099 packets mix 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-INT, and 1099-DIV forms with different box layouts in a single file.
What breaks in production:
- Checkbox state: the federal tax classification on line 3a decides how a payee is treated. A missed or misread checkbox is a wrong answer, not a formatting issue.
- Handwritten TINs: a digit misread in an SSN or EIN fails IRS TIN matching later, after payments are made.
- LLC classification: an LLC must also write a tax classification letter (C, S, or P), which is often handwritten next to the checkbox.
- Mixed packets: onboarding packets and year-end 1099 batches combine several forms that need splitting before extraction.
How the three options compare for tax forms:
| Extend | LlamaParse | Reducto | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall RealDoc-Bench accuracy (four industries, including IRS forms; W-9 and 1099 accuracy not scored separately) | 95.7% | 92.1% Agentic | 91.1% Agentic |
| Customer proof on tax forms | Column Tax tested 16 vendors on real W-2 and 1099 documents; Extend was over 35% more accurate | None cited here | None cited here |
| Splitting mixed tax packets | Split API, benchmarked on compound tax documents in PoliTax-Split | Split, in beta | Split |
| Per-field evidence | Citations with page and polygon, confidence metadata | cite_sources and confidence_scores, off by default in the API | Citations opt-in; enabling them turns off chunking |
| Review of uncertain fields | Built-in human review step in workflows | Built by your application | Built by your application |
Whichever tool you pick, validate before data reaches payments or filings:
- Check TIN format: nine digits, formatted as an SSN or an EIN, consistent with the classification checked on line 3a.
- Run TINs through IRS TIN matching before issuing 1099s.
- Require the Part II signature and date, and record the form revision.
- Route low-confidence checkbox and TIN values to review rather than auto-approving them.
For a step-by-step pipeline, see tax document processing for 1099 and W-9 data extraction.
When to stay with LlamaParse
Stay with LlamaParse when parsed text feeds a LlamaIndex index for search, Q&A, or agents, when the documents are mostly clean, and when your team already owns evaluation and review. Move to an alternative when extracted values drive payments, filings, or underwriting, when tables run long, or when every field needs a citation and a reviewer.
FAQ
What are the best LlamaParse alternatives for processing W-9 tax forms?
Extend is the strongest alternative when W-9 data drives payments or 1099 filings. On RealDoc-Bench overall, which spans four industries and includes IRS forms but does not score W-9s separately, Extend Parse 2.0 scored 95.7% against 92.1% for LlamaParse Agentic and 91.1% for Reducto Agentic. Column Tax tested 16 vendors on real W-2 and 1099 documents and found Extend over 35% more accurate. Extend returns citations and confidence for checkbox and TIN fields and routes uncertain values to human review. Reducto is another option, and LlamaParse works when you enable cite_sources and confidence_scores and build review yourself.
How much does LlamaParse cost?
LlamaParse includes 10,000 free credits a month. Starter costs $50 a month for 40,000 credits, Pro costs $500 a month for 400,000 credits, and Enterprise is custom. 1,000 credits cost $1.25, basic parsing starts at 1 credit per page, and agentic tiers cost more per page.
Is LlamaParse accurate enough for production extraction?
It depends on the documents. On RealDoc-Bench, LlamaParse Agentic scored 92.1% field-level accuracy. On LongArray-Extract, which tests long repeated-record tables, LlamaParse Standard scored 47.2% and completed 26 of 45 documents, and Agentic scored 34.7% and completed 35. Test on your longest and hardest documents before relying on it for systems of record.
Does LlamaParse return citations for extracted fields?
Yes, when enabled. Extract supports cite_sources and confidence_scores, but both default to false in the API. The Extract playground turns them on by default, so check your API configuration before production.
What are LlamaParse's main limitations?
Documented limits include 500 pages and 100 MB per Extract job, text beyond 64 KB per page dropped without an error, a beta Split API that accepts only PDF, DOCX, and PPTX, and citations and confidence that are off by default in the API. Review queues, evaluation, and form filling are left to your application.
